CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State Hall of Fame wrestler Roger Weigel (front row, fourth from left) of Oregon City, an NCAA champion in 1971, passed away on Thursday night in Portland.
Weigel lettered from 1969-71 under coach Dale Thomas and was a member of two Pacific-8 Conference championship teams. He defeated defending champion Dwayne Keller of Oklahoma State to win the 1971 NCAA title at 134 pounds in a bout Thomas called “the finest single performance by a Beaver he had ever seen.”
Weigel was inducted into the OSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993, and was named to the Pacific-12 Conference's All-Century Wrestling team earlier this year.
A three-time Pac-8 Champion, Weigel went 33-1 as a senior and finished his OSU career with a 78-12-2 (.859) record. He also placed third at 126 pounds at the 1970 NCAA championships and was a two-time All-American.
He was also the state of Oregon AAU freestyle champion in 1967 and 1968, toured Europe with the 1970 1970 National Federation Team, and competed in the 1971 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic.
“Roger was a loyal Beaver alumni,” who accompanied the Beavers to this year's Pacific-12 Conference and NCAA championships to cheer for his alma mater, OSU coach Jim Zalesky said. “He was a great supporter of the program and will be missed.
“We want to send our condolences to all of Roger's family, friends and teammates during this time.”
He is survived by his former wife, Phyllis; two children, and two grandchildren. Memorial service information will be forthcoming.
