Beavers Take Two of Three From Stanford, Gonzaga
March 05, 2016 | Men's Rowing
LOWELL, Ore. – The Oregon State men's rowing team got its season started Saturday morning with a three-team regatta on the Beavers' home course at Dexter Reservoir. The Beavers earned first place finishes in two out of three races finishing ahead of Stanford and Gonzaga.
“I'm proud of the guys,” head coach Gabe Winkler said. “The total day was amazing racing. I didn't think it would be that tight across the board. So it was fun to have these teams up here and have that quality of racing.”
Oregon State's Junior Varsity 8 won the closest race of the day separated from the Cardinal crew by just over one second. The Beavers trailed most of the way down the course before walking through the Card in time to be nose-to-nose heading into the final 500-meters and pulled ahead in the final sprint. The Beavers' JV8 of Zack Moffitt (coxswain), Baxter Call, Collin Griffitts, Jesse Maritz, Nathan Smith, Liam Kucey, Rafael Gorriarán, Grant VanKampen and Austin DeMartine claim victory with a time of 6-minutes, 1.5-seconds, just over one second ahead of Stanford (6:02.6).
“With 500 to go it was anybody's race and they won by about a second. That's just guts,” Winkler said.
The OSU Varsity 8 got ran out of room as the Orange and Black crew mounted a late comeback on the Stanford crew in the final 500m. The Beavers fell behind early in the race and still trailed by a boat length at the 1500m mark, but a late, hard sprint brought them within just a few strokes of capturing the lead and the victory when the two boats crossed the finish.
“With the varsity guys it was a tough race,” Winkler said. “It was really hard. They got down a little bit and had to fight back and just ran out of space. That will just be more fuel for training.”
In the final race of the day, Oregon State's Freshman 8 put on a show taking an early lead and expanded it throughout the course. The youngest boat of Beavers crewed by Hunter Smith, Aaron Baker, Frank Horpel, Glenn Miller, Dmitri Shockey, Chandler Boyd, Miles Moran, Connor Crozier and coxed by Sydney Poe, covered the course, which had become choppy due to wind, in a time of 6:08.7 gaining an open water win over Stanford (6:19.7) and Gonzaga (6:42.2). The Beavers' Third Varsity 8 finished third in the race (6:30.8) ahead of the Zags.
The Beavers are idle until the San Diego Crew Classic next month. April 2-3.
