New York City – Oregon State sophomore heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi won twice on Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Madison Square Garden.
The seventh-seed, Dhesi (29-3) pinned Jeramy Sweany of Cornell in 1:17 in the first round and then won by major decision, 12-4, over Collin Jensen of Nebraska in the round of 16. He will take a 15-match winning streak into Friday morning's match against second-seeded Kyle Snyder of Ohio State.
Ronnie Bresser (125), Joey Palmer (133), Joey Delgado (149), Seth Thomas (165) and Corey Griego (184) all recovered from first-round losses to win their wrestleback matches and stay in contention for third place. They all moved to Sweet 16 in the consolation bracket.
It was the first win at NCAAs for Delgado and Palmer, who were 0-2 in 2014 in their only previous appearance; for Thomas, who was 0-2 in 2015, and for Griego, making his first NCAA appearance.
The Beavers scored 7.5 points on Thursday and are in 18th place heading into Session 3, which starts at 8 a.m. Friday.
The 11th-seeded Bresser (29-8) gave up one point for stalling and another for three cautions in a 6-5, two-overtime loss to Cornell's Dalton Macri in the first round. He then eliminated No. 6-seeded Eddie Klimara of Oklahoma State, 2-1, also in overtime, in the first round of the wrestlebacks.
Palmer (25-11) lost 5-4 on riding time to No. 3-seeded Zane Richards of Illinois in the first round. He then stayed in contention for third place with a 6-0 shutout of Austin Eicher of Northern Illinois in the first round of the wrestlebacks.
Delgado (24-13) fell 11-8 to 11th-seeded Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State in the first round. He then defeated Alex Kocer of South Dakota State 9-7 to stay alive in the wrestlebacks.
Thomas lost 13-4 to Chad Welch of Purdue in the opening round, his second loss to the eighth-seeded Boilermaker this season. He then topped Dakota Juarez of Eastern Michigan 8-5 in the wrestlebacks to stay in the tournament.
Griego (24-11) led 3-0 early but eventually lost 15-6 to 14th-seeded Willie Miklus of Missouri. He then eliminated No. 3-seeded Victor Avery of Edinboro, 11-5, for his first NCAA victory.
Bresser faces unseeded Sean Russell of Edinboro on Friday. Palmer meets 13th-seeded Cameron Kelly of Ohio. They did not wrestle in the regular season.
