
Softball Q&A: McKenna Arriola

CORVALLIS, Ore. – In the days leading up to the 2016 season, OSUBeavers.com will help you get to know the 2016 Oregon State softball team a little better with some Q&A sessions. Featured in today's Q&A is sophomore infielder McKenna Arriola.
A native of West Hills, Calif., Arriola is set to begin her sophomore campaign with the Beavers after spending this summer with the gold medal-winning U.S. Junior National Team. As a freshman, Arriola hit .262 with 39 runs scored, second-most on the team, and a team-high seven stolen bases.
What is your favorite thing about being part of the program?
The opportunity to play at such a high level.
When did you know you wanted to play at Oregon State?
The first time I stepped on campus. I knew then that it was the right place for me.
How would you best describe the coaching staff?
Fun, energetic and passionate.
What trip are you most looking forward to this season?
Palm Springs, Calif. (Mary Nutter Classic)
Do you have any gameday rituals or superstitions? If so, what are some of them?
When I'm hitting I have a certain ritual that I like to do when I step in the box – I twist my bat and touch the outer part of the plate.
Does the number you wear have any significance? If so, what is it?
Yes, I wear it for my older brother.
What's the one rule you would change in softball?
I'd make it so you can't strike out.
If you could play any other position for one day, what would it be and why?
Center field, because I've always wanted to rob a home run.
What is your favorite sport to attend or watch outside of softball? Why?
Basketball, because it is so fast-paced.
Which of your teammates would be most likely to U.S. President or political office? Why?
Bev (Miller) – she is super smart.
Which of your teammates would be most likely to be a comedian? Why?
Everyone. The whole team is funny.
Which teammate would be most likely to be a coach one day? Why?
Lovie Lopez. She wants to be one.
What's your favorite catchphrase that one of your coaches uses?
“Get on the line!” – head coach Laura Berg
What are your hobbies outside of playing softball?
Snowboarding, or anything active. I can't sit still.
Describe a funny or interesting part of studying your major at Oregon State.
The whole baseball team studies my major, too.
When did you start playing softball and how did you get your start playing?
At age 11 or 12. I played baseball for a year so after that I just decided to switch.
What sets softball apart from the other sports you enjoy?
I just enjoy it more and have more passion for it than other sports.
What advice would you give to a young athlete who has aspirations of playing sports at the collegiate level?
Believe in yourself and never give up.
Do you remember your first home run? If so, describe it.
It was an inside-the-park home run. I hit it over the center fielder's head.
