Freshmen Rise in Beavers' Win Over Huskies

SEATTLE, Wash. – Freshmen Mary Jacobsen and Mariana Colussi-Pelaez each enjoyed the best meet of their short careers Monday night as the No. 16 Beavers defeated Washington 195.325-194.275 in Seattle.
Jacobsen secured the first individual title of her career scoring personal-best 9.825 on OSU's opening event of the evening, the uneven bars. In addition, she added a personal-mark of 9.750 on the floor exercise while also mixing in what was one of the best vaults of her career.
“We need to come out each week and thrive in competition, tonight we just survived competition,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “We've been up and down the last few weeks and need to be more consistent from the top of the lineup to the bottom if we want to reach the goals we've set for the season. We have a short week ahead and have a quick turn-around so we'll have to bounce back quickly.”
The Beavers finished the meet in strong fashion posting a season-best 49.200 on the balance beam in the final rotation. It is the second straight meet that OSU has notched a season-high on the apparatus. Junior Madeline Gardiner scored 9.90 to close out the meet and won the event title while fellow juniors Silvia Colussi-Pelaez and Kaytianna McMillan each tallied 9.850 to tie for third. In addition, Mariana Colussi-Pelaez added a career-best 9.775 on the beam.
Gardiner tallied a second win on the vault with a 9.850.
Oregon State has a short week returning to Corvallis late tonight before traveling to UCLA for another road meet on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. The top 25 match-up with the Bruins will air live on Pac-12 Networks. The Beavers are slated to return home to compete at Gill Coliseum for three straight weeks beginning Saturday, Feb. 20 against California.
