February 08, 2016 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – In the days leading up to the 2016 season, OSUBeavers.com will help you get to know the 2016 Oregon State softball team a little better with some Q&A sessions. Featured in today's Q&A is sophomore utility player Heidi Hall.
Hall enters her sophomore season at Oregon State after joining the Beavers out of Eugene, Ore. and Willamette High School. Hall made her first collegiate as a freshman last season on April 2, 2015 in a game against Arizona.
What is your favorite thing about being part of the program?
I would say being able to be a part of a team that is like a tight-knit family.
When did you know you wanted to play at Oregon State?
I used to go to the camps when I was little. Ever since I stepped foot on campus, I knew I wanted to be a Beaver.
How would you best describe the coaching staff?
Competitive and sarcastic.
What trip are you most looking forward to this season?
The trip to Fullerton, Calif. (Judi Garman Classic). We play some very good teams and I'm excited for us to compete and play our game.
Do you have any gameday rituals or superstitions? If so, what are some of them?
I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little “stitious” (quote from the TV show The Office). I have to throw exactly three of all of my pitches in warm-ups in order to feel good. No more, no less!
Does the number you wear have any significance? If so, what is it?
I wear No. 17, and it didn't have any significance when I first picked it, but now it's something that fits.
What's the one rule you would change in softball?
Drop third strike.
If you could play any other position for one day, what would it be and why?
Catchers, because I personally think that the catchers are the true leaders out there. They keep us pitchers in check.
What is your favorite sport to attend or watch outside of softball? Why?
UFC – Ronda Rousey to be exact. The intensity and work ethic she has makes it impossible not to respect her.
Which of your teammates would be most likely to U.S. President or political office? Why?
Natalie Hampton, because she is a natural-born leader with an amazing work ethic.
Which of your teammates would be most likely to be a comedian? Why?
Maddie (Madison Anthony). That girl always has the team laughing about something.
Which teammate would be most likely to be a coach one day? Why?
Lovie Lopez. People respect what she says and she has an amazing work ethic.
What are your hobbies outside of playing softball?
Hunting, fishing, snow sports and I can play the guitar.
Describe a funny or interesting part of studying your major at Oregon State.
I'm undecided, so the interesting part for me is figuring out which major I want to declare.
When did you start playing softball and how did you get your start playing?
My dad signed me up when I was seven. I fell in love with the game and the rest is history.
What sets softball apart from the other sports you enjoy?
I'm not really good at any other sports.
What advice would you give to a young athlete who has aspirations of playing sports at the collegiate level?
Don't let anyone tell you that you can't achieve your dreams. They are wrong when they say that.
Do you remember your first home run? If so, describe it.
It was in my first year playing in 18 Gold. I was in a bad hitting slump. I hit the ball and thought I popped up yet again, and as I was running through first base, I remember my coach yelling, “What are you doing? Keep going, it's a home run.”
