CORVALLIS, Ore. – Senior right-handed pitcher Bev Miller of the Oregon State softball team has received the Play It Forward Award for January 2016, the Oregon Sports Awards announced on Wednesday morning. The award is sponsored by Nike and Providence Health & Services.
To be eligible for the Play It Forward Award, prospective recipients must be involved with an athletic team at their institution, spend at least an average of four community volunteer hours per month with an organization or program that assists youths in being active through sports or physical activity, as well as demonstrate initiative and drive by going beyond expected school responsibilities.
“Bev is the epitome of what Oregon State athletes are all about,” Oregon State head coach Laura Berg said. She does it all, where it's in academics, athletics or in the community service aspect. Bev is constantly asking me or others if there is an opportunity for the team to do some kind of community service. She's definitely a role model for other student-athletes.”
The award is given to one collegiate and one high school athlete from the state of Oregon per month. Miller is joined by Ian McClanan, a senior at Catlin Gabel High School competing in soccer, tennis and basketball.
“Bev Miller exemplifies what we see as the spirit of an Everyday Champion,” said Kimya Massey, senior associate athletic director for student-athlete development and sport administrator for softball. “In her time at Oregon State, she has consistently made an impact on the community and young people. She can give people an idea of what they can become in the future with hard work, effort and perseverance.”
Miller served as a volunteer coach with the Lady Knights, a local 12 and under softball team, with an emphasis on teaching teamwork and training for softball. The Oregon Sports Awards called Miller “one of OSU's best representatives in helping youths understand the value of physical activity and literacy,” and lauded her as “usually the first to volunteer and bring other athletes along to serve as role models in sports.”
Miller, a native of Portland, Ore., is an outstanding student and majors in bioengineering.
