Corvallis, Ore. – Oregon State tied the school record for consecutive wins Sunday evening with a 64-54 victory over UCLA on Senior Night at Gill Coliseum.
Senior guard Jamie Weisner had 25 points and a career-high 14 rebounds and senior center Ruth Hamblin had 16 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots in their final regular-season home game. They both left the court in the final minute to a standing ovation from the crowd of 5,654.
"What a great win and what a great night," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "That's a good as it gets. I couldn't be more proud of this team. To face a team as talented and well coached as UCLA and to just lay it on the line was special. This game got everything we had, and that empitomized our senior class."
Junior guard Sydney Wiese added 21 points and three assists and junior guard Gabriella Hanson had five assists and two steals as the seventh-ranked Beavers (24-3, 15-1 Pac-12) remained tied with Arizona State for first place in the Pacific-12 Conference.
OSU stretched its winning streak to 14 consecutive games, matching the school record established during the 1982-83 season. It also improved to 42-4 in its last 46 home games.
The Beavers trailed 12-5 early and 14-11 after the first quarter. But they took control by outscoring UCLA 23-15 in the second quarter for a 34-29 halftime lead, and then used a 13-4 run in the first seven minutes of the third quarter to build a 14-point (47-33) advantage at the 3:11 mark.
The 12th-ranked Bruins trimmed OSU's lead to eight points twice in the fourth quarter, the last time at 56-48 with 4:01 remaining. But the Beavers clamped down defensively and did just enough at the foul line to keep the Bruins at arm's length and close the game out.
Hamblin now has 1,172 career points; she passed Casey Bunn (2003-07) for 11th place on OSU's career scoring list. Wiese tied Judy Shannon (1991-92) for 14th place overall, with 1,148.
The Beavers have not allowed more than 54 points in their last 14 games and have held 23 of their 27 opponents to 54 or fewer points. No opponent has shot 45 percent against OSU this season, and no opponent has shot better than 35 percent during its current winning streak.
Seniors Weisner, Hamblin, Deven Hunter, Samantha Siegner and Jen'Von'Ta Hill were honored before the game. The four-year seniors – Weisner, Hamblin, Hunter and Siegner – have won 75 games over the last three seasons and 85 for their careers.
The Beavers resume Pac-12 action at 8 p.m. Friday at Stanford. It will be televised by Pac-12 Networks. They conclude the regular season at California on Feb. 28.
