Corvallis, Ore. – Junior Kaytianna McMillan won the beam outright and tied with teammate Mary Jacobsen for first place on bars to lead No. 16 Oregon State to a convincing 196.850-195.350 victory over No. 15 California on Saturday in a Pac-12 Conference dual.
McMillan set PRs with near-perfect 9.95s on beam and on bars as the Beavers (7-3, 3-2 Pac-12) posted a season-high team score and cracked the 196-point barrier for the second meet in a row before an appreciative Gill Coliseum crowd of 3,009. They had their previous high of 196.350 at Lindenwood on Jan. 15.
It was just the second time this season that McMillan had competed in three events.
“You have to take it day-by-day really and do what your body can handle each day,” she said. “I have been building on that; each week you can do a little more and I've been doing that.
“I added floor last week. I have to keep adding events until I'm back fully.”
She has not scored lower than a 9.85 since going to three events against UCLA, and has broken 9.90 in three of her six performances.
“It gives you a lot of confidence, going up there and doing routines you practice,” she said. “Getting the results you are looking for really gives you the extra boost that you are doing what you should be doing.”
Junior All-American Madeline Gardiner (pictured) tied for first place on floor (9.90), PRed and took second on the beam (9.925), tied for second on vault (9.85) and captured the all-around with a career-high 39.475.
She won the all-around for the fifth time this season and scored at least 39.150 for the sixth time in seven meets.
The Beavers set season-highs in their bars (49.40) and beam (49.325) rotations and tied their previous best on the floor exercise (49.225) in their first home meet since Jan. 30. OSU hit all 24 routines and did not count a score lower than 9.65 for the first time this season.
“We all came together before the UCLA meet and we all said we know where we are, at the middle of our season basically,” Gardiner said. “The outcomes of the last two meets have been very important for us.
“We have shown we really know what we are doing, so I think they have been really important.”
OSU took the lead on the first rotation, 48.90-48.70, and never looked back in extending their all-time home record in the series to 31-0 and their all-time lead to 88-5.
“It's huge,” OSU coach Tanya Chaplin said of the outcome. “But it's not only Cal we are competing against; we are competing against everyone in the country so we need to put up scores like this on a consistent basis.
“Your scores are what rank you. You're in a dual meet and obviously you want to beat the team you are facing, but you want a good score to compete with the nation.”
Jacobsen is a freshmen from Puyallup, Wash., who had started every meet on vault, bars and floor before sitting out floor on Saturday. She established new PRs on bars (9.50) and vault (9.825).
Other PRs were set by sophomore Shireen Khamedoost on vault (9.775); freshman Mariana Colussi-Pelaez on bars (9.85), and junior Taylor Ricci (9.825) and freshman McKenna Singley (9.75) on floor.
The Beavers stay home to face Stanford at 7 p.m. on Feb. 29 in their next action. The meet will be televised by Pac-12 Oregon and Pac-12 Bay Area.
“We've had a couple of meets going the right direction,” Chaplin said. “We want to keep that going the rest of the season and build off what we did tonight.
“Obviously we know there are still lots of things we need to work on. We'll go in and really work on those details so we get stronger, yet save our bodies.”
