Beavers finish sweep of USC
February 20, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Corvallis, Ore. – Oregon State senior guard Jamie Weisner (pictured) scored a game-high 18 points and junior running mate Sydney Wiese added 14 points and nine assists as the seventh-ranked Beavers throttled USC 76-52 Friday night before a Gill Coliseum crowd of 3,615.
The Beavers (23-3, 14-1 Pac-12) extended their current winning streak to 13 games in a row. They also completed a season-sweep of the Trojans (18-11, 6-9) for the second straight year.
"I liked our resilience and out toughness tonight," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "We came out of the locker room in the second half as the aggressor. We got into such a good rhythm in the third quarter. We made some plays defensively and took control of the game. It was good to see a complete game from all 12 players on our roster."
Weisner scored 16 of her 18 points in the third quarter, when the Beavers outscored USC 27-12 to take a 56-35 advantage and break open what had been a close game. OSU led just 29-23 at halftime, but it outscored USC 12-2 in the first four minutes of the third quarter to pull away for good.
OSU added a 20-17 edge in the fourth quarter and outscored USC 47-29 in the second half. It led by as many as 27 points in two instances and by at least 20 points for the final 5:49.
No opponent has scored more than 53 points during OSU's winning streak, which began with back-to-back blowouts of Oregon on Jan. 8 and Jan. 10. USC shot just 25 percent (8-32) in the second half and 27 percent (17-63) for the game, and was outrebounded 44-35.
Weisner scored nine OSU points in a row during one stretch of the third quarter, when the Beavers hit their first seven shots and went 11 of 14 overall from the field. She now has 1,590 career points, sixth-best in school history; she passed Anette Mollerstrom, who scored 1,582 from 1993-96.
Junior guard Gabriella Hanson and freshman guard Taylor Kalmer added 10 points each for the Beavers. It was Hanson's first game in double figures since a 20-point outburst against Cal on Jan. 15; Kalmer tied her career high and led OSU's 25-20 edge in bench scoring.
OSU's 13 straight wins is one short of the school record, established during the 1982-83 season. Its four consecutive victories over the Trojans is their longest such streak in a series that began in the 1976-77 season.
Senior center Ruth Hamblin had six points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots in just 23 minutes. She passed Hollye Chapman (2001-04) for 12th place on the career scoring list; Hamblin now has 1,156 points to Chapman's 1,151.
The Beavers improved to 41-4 in their last 45 home games. They resume Pac-12 action at 6 p.m. Sunday with a Senior Night contest against UCLA at Gill Coliseum, their final home game of the regular season.
Seniors Weisner, Hamblin, Deven Hunter, Samantha Siegner and Jen'Von'Ta Hill will be honored before the game, which will be televised by Pac-12 Networks. UCLA handed the Beavers their only loss in Pac-12 play this season, 71-51, in Los Angeles back on Jan. 4.
