Last Game
Nick Madrigal went 4-for-4 and Max Engelbrekt picked up the save in his first appearance since 2014 as the Beavers held off Ball State for a 7-6 win Friday afternoon in Surprise. Madrigal and KJ Harrison each had two RBI for the Beavers, who won their seventh consecutive opening day game. Christian Donahue, Jack Anderson and Trever Morrison also had two hits for OSU.
Madrigal, Wow
Try coming up with a better way to describe Nick Madrigal's collegiate debut. You'd be hard pressed to fine one. The freshman laced four singles, drove in two and fielded two ground balls successfully in the win over Ball State.
Meanwhile, Grenier Walks A Lot
On the opposite end of the hit sprectrum is fellow frosh Cadyn Grenier who went 0-for-0 on Friday. He walked three times and sacrificed via a bunt.
Unanimously Top 10
Oregon State is a unanimous top 10 selection as the 2016 unfolds. The Beavers are ranked as high as No. 5 by Baseball America, D1Baseball.com and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). OSU has an average ranking of sixth.
Near Unanimous In The Pac-12
Oregon State earned nine of a possible 10 first-place votes in the Pac-12 Conference's preseason poll. The Beavers thusly garnered 98 of a possible 100 points to become the near unanimous choice to win the Pac-12. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.
They're Sophomores Now
There were just two freshmen named All-Pac-12 last season. KJ Harrison and Drew Rasmussen return as sophomores in 2016 after they were both also named Freshman All-Americans. Harrison was also named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Year.
Singles
• The Beavers are opening their season in Arizona for the third consecutive season. OSU is 7-2 in opening weekends since 2014.
• KJ Harrison is projected to be an All-American by multiple publications.
• OSU is 22-9 in neutral games since 2013.
• Oregon State has outscored Utah Valley, 46-8, during the Beavers' five-game win streak.
• Max Engelbrekt is the lone Beaver still active from 2013 when OSU last played UVU.
• Steven Kwan, Eric Parnow and Bryce Fehmel also made their collegiate debuts Friday.
