Beavers bump off Buffaloes
February 13, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State women's basketball team stretched its winning streak to 11 consecutive games on Friday with a methodical 77-50 triumph over Colorado before a DAM Cancer Night crowd of 3,677 at Gill Coliseum.
"I was really impressed by the way Colorado started the game tonight," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "They got some looks we didn't want them to early on. I thought our defense locked in and got better as the game went along. We executed well. The way we moved the ball was really the story of the game for us. All 12 players played tonight and all 12 of them played well."
Four players scored in double figures for the 8th-ranked Beavers (21-3, 12-1 Pac-12), who have not lost since falling at UCLA on Jan. 4. It was also the 11th straight time OSU has held its opponent to 53 or fewer points, and the 20th time this season.
Senior guard Jamie Weisner had 16 points and three steals and junior guard Sydney Wiese added 15 points, eight assists and five rebounds as OSU completed a season-sweep of the Buffaloes (6-18, 1-12). OSU also prevailed 61-47 in Boulder back on Jan. 24.
Senior forward Deven Hunter added 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals and sophomore forward Marie Gulich had 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots as OSU improved to 11-1 at home this season.
The Buffaloes kept pace for just over a quarter before the Beavers used a 12-5 run over the final 6:47 of the second quarter to create some separation. Gulich's rebound basket with two seconds left gave them a 37-28 halftime edge.
OSU steadily pulled away in the third quarter and established its first double-digit lead (44-34) with 7:49 left. They held a 56-42 advantage after three periods, and then opened the fourth quarter with 12 unanswered points to remove all doubt.
They led by 20 or more points for the final seven minutes and their largest lead was 27 points, the second and final time at 73-46 with 2:06 to play.
The Beavers outscored the Buffaloes 34-20 in the paint, 16-12 off turnovers, 15-8 on second-chance points, 12-6 on fast-break points and 17-11 off the bench in a thorough victory.
In conjunction with the DAM Cancer event, senior center Ruth Hamlin had her hair cut on the court afterward. Her shorn locks will be used to make wigs for patients recovering from cancer treatment.
The Beavers resume Pac-12 action at 1 p.m. Sunday against Utah at Gill Coliseum. The game will not be televised. OSU defeated the Utes 62-53 in Salt Lake City on Jan. 22 in their previous meeting this season.
