
Softball Q&A: Lovie Lopez

CORVALLIS, Ore. – In the days leading up to the 2016 season, OSUBeavers.com will help you get to know the 2016 Oregon State softball team a little better with some Q&A sessions. Featured in today's Q&A is sophomore outfielder Lovie Lopez.
The Santa Fe Springs, Calif. native enters her sophomore season after being selected Pac-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention in 2015. In 48 games and 46 starts last season, Lopez hit .290 with a pair of triples, three home runs and 22 RBI.
What is your favorite thing about being part of the program?
Being a part of a Pac-12 program.
When did you know you wanted to play at Oregon State?
I knew as soon as I saw Oregon State's beautiful campus.
How would you best describe the coaching staff?
Very passionate about the game.
What trip are you most looking forward to this season?
The UCLA series and the Vegas tournament.
Do you have any gameday rituals or superstitions? If so, what are some of them?
Listen to J. Cole and Notorious B.I.G.
Does the number you wear have any significance? If so, what is it?
At a young age, I started wearing No. 29 because of Natasha Watley.
What's the one rule you would change in softball?
No foul balls inside the fences of the field.
If you could play any other position for one day, what would it be and why?
Second base so I could get some grounders on the dirt.
What is your favorite sport to attend or watch outside of softball? Why?
L.A. Dodgers baseball. I bleed blue.
Which of your teammates would be most likely to U.S. President or political office? Why?
Bev Miller, because she's super smart.
Which of your teammates would be most likely to be a comedian? Why?
Jessica Garcia. She's a goofball.
Which teammate would be most likely to be a coach one day? Why?
Me.
What's your favorite catchphrase that one of your coaches uses?
“You gotta go!” – head coach Laura Berg. It gets me going.
What are your hobbies outside of playing softball?
I like to listen to music.
Describe a funny or interesting part of studying your major at Oregon State.
I get to study different crimes. I enjoy that kind of thing.
When did you start playing softball and how did you get your start playing?
I started playing at age four. My grandpa bought me a T-ball set when I started walking, and my dad put me in the sport.
What sets softball apart from the other sports you enjoy?
I love to hit.
What advice would you give to a young athlete who has aspirations of playing sports at the collegiate level?
Put school first. Get good grades.
Do you remember your first home run? If so, describe it.
I was around age seven or eight. It was the only game my parents happened to not attend.
