Beavers Open Maui Classic With Win Over Idaho
December 02, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Wailuku, Hawaii – The No. 18/24 Oregon State women's basketball team opened the inaugural Maui Jim Maui Classic with a 60-49 victory over Idaho Friday evening at the War Memorial Gymnasium in Wailuku, Maui.
"I was really proud of our players," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "Idaho is a tricky team to play, because they are so well coached. We played the end of the game with a different level of focus. This team was able to reach a new level of toughness in this game, and that's why we were able to find a way to win."
Senior Sydney Wiese led the way with 19 points, including makes on all 11 of her free-throw attempts. Wiese becomes the sixth player in Oregon State history to hit more than 10 free throws without a miss. Redshirt-junior Breanna Brown led all players with 14 rebounds, to go along with eight points and four blocks.
Senior Kolbie Orum went 4-for-6 to finish the game with 10 points, while sophomore Katie McWilliams tallied eight points.
As a team, Oregon State shot 42.0 percent from the floor (21-for-50), compared to 31.0 percent (18-for-58) for Idaho. The Beavers held a 49-27 advantage in rebounds and out-scored the Vandals 31-18 in the second half.
The teams found themselves in a tight one early on, as the Beavers took a one-point advantage into the first media timeout. The Vandals would jump ahead 14-13 after a quarter of play. Idaho continued to battle in the second frame, surging to a 29-15 advantage. Oregon State fought back from there, using a 14-2 run to get within a bucket at the break, with the score 31-29.
Wiese tallied nine points in the first half, with five of them coming from the free throw line. Brown entered the intermission with 11 rebounds and three blocks.
Oregon State leveled the score less than a minute into the second half, and proceeded to go in front shortly thereafter. The teams would trade punches from there, as the Beavers headed to the final period up 43-39. Oregon State never trailed in the fourth quarter, as they took the 11-point victory.
Sophomore guard Taylor Kalmer made her first appearance of the season, after missing the first four games.
The Beavers will close out its week in Maui on Saturday, when it takes on BYU. The Cougars defeated UNLV in the opening game of the Maui Jim Maui Classic. OSU will return home on Dec. 10 for a matchup with Southern Utah. Tickets for all Oregon State games can be purchased at BeaverTickets.com.
