Beavers head to Utah Valley, Reno
December 14, 2016 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team resumes its dual-meet season on Thursday at Utah Valley University. The match starts at 6 p.m. at Lockhart Arena; it is part of the Pac-12 versus Big 12 showdown.
The Beavers (1-2) have not competed since Dec. 3, when they took 16th at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Senior Joey Delgado (149) and sophomore Corey Griego (197) led the Beavers by taking fifth place in their respective weight classes.
"I though Corey came back great after a first-round loss," OSU coach Jim Zalesky said. "He's getting adjusted to the weight, which is big for him," in his first season at 197 after two years at 184.
"Delgado wrestled well the whole tournament. And even though Cody Crawford didn't place, he got to wrestle more heavyweights and continued to learn his new weight class," after three years at 197.
"Those guys got a lot of matches they needed. We had progress, but we had too many guys who went 0-2. We have to get them back on track this weekend."
The Wolverines (1-2) edged OSU 20-19 at Gill Coliseum last season. They lost 32-14 at Boise State on Dec. 9 in their most recent dual; Thursday is their home opener. OSU fell 38-7 to No. 10 Michigan on Nov. 20 in its most recent dual.
"We have to get things turned around from that dual," Zalesky said. "We have to figure out our best dual-meet lineup; we're still looking at that. Utah Valley gives us a chance to improve on what we did against Michigan."
The Beavers head to Nevada from Orem for Sunday's day-long Reno Tournament of Champions, their final action before Christmas. They conclude the calendar year Dec. 29-30 at the Ken Kraft Midlands Tournament at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
"The tournaments give us a lot of matches," Zalesky said. "These next three competitions are when the coaches will really look at and evaluate our team, and see where we have to go from there."
