McWilliams Scores 29 as Beavers Top Lamar
November 11, 2016 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – The No. 17/25 Oregon State women's basketball team extended its home winning streak to 13-consecutive games Friday afternoon with an 88-56 victory over Lamar at Gill Coliseum.
Sophomore Katie McWilliams posted the first double-digit scoring game of her career, going for 29 points on 11-for-14 shooting from the floor. The Salem, Ore. native added six rebounds and four assists to her stat-line. Senior Preseason All-Pac-12 selection Sydney Wiese hit her first six shots of the afternoon to finish with 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting.
"This was a great day for us," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "I loved the effort from our team today. One of our goals for today was to be consistent, and our effort fit that bill today. Give Lamar credit – their speed and athleticism presented a very good challenge for us. I think we handled their press really well, and we definitely did a great job shooting the ball. I think this group just set the tone for what they are going to become the rest of this year. This is a resilient group that plays unselfish basketball and is really gritty. I thought we saw that today."
As a team, Oregon State shot 60.3 percent (35-for-58) from the floor, and held Lamar to 30.9 percent (21-for-68). The Beavers also held a 47-28 advantage in rebounding. A crowd of 3,076 was on hand to witness Oregon State's season-opener.
Redshirt-junior Breanna Brown tallied her first career double-double, finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in just 16 minutes. Junior Marie Gulich recorded 12 points and seven rebounds in her first career start.
Oregon State got off to a flying start, scoring the first eight points of the game on its way to an early 13-4 lead. Lamar would make a slight surge from there, cutting the edge to 15-10 at the game's first media timeout. The Beavers would take control to end the period, hitting 11 of their 15 first-quarter shots to finish the frame with a 26-13 advantage.
Oregon State clamped down defensively to start the second quarter, holding the Cardinals to just a single basket in the first five minutes of the period. The Beavers would extend the lead to 20 mid-way through the second, before carrying a 46-27 edge into the intermission. Oregon State shot 61.3 percent (19-for-31) in the opening 20 minutes.
The Beavers continued to extend the lead in the third quarter, hitting six of their first seven shots to go up by 30. Oregon State would not look back from there, as it cruised to the 32-point win.
Freshmen Mikayla Pivec, Kat Tudor, Madison Washington, Janessa Thropay and Tarea Green (redshirt) all made their Oregon State debut.
Oregon State will return to Gill Coliseum on Monday for a matchup with Idaho State. That game is slated to tip-off at 6 p.m. Tickets for all Oregon State home games can be purchased online at BeaverTickets.com.
