Beavers Finish Fifth At Duck Commander
November 01, 2016 | Men's Golf
EL DORADO, Ark. – Conner Kumpula fired an even-par 72 in the final round of the Duck Commander Intercollegiate on Tuesday to help the Oregon State men's golf team finish fifth in their final tournament of the fall season.
The Beavers concluded the three-day, 54-hole event with a 40-over 305-296-303--904 at the par-72, 7,064-yard Mystic Creek Golf Club.
Arkansas State won the 10-team tournament with a 31-over 895, while Stephen F. Austin finished second with a 33-over 897 and Arkansas-Little Rock placed third with a 36-over 900.
Senior Calum Hill finished in a tie career-best tie for sixth place with a 6-over 74-71-77--222. His previous best finish was ninth at the El Macero Classic last spring. Hill had seven birdies over the three rounds and stayed away from the big numbers that hurt several golfers in the 60-player field.
Kumpula, a senior from Albany, Ore., eagled the par-5, 582-yard first hole and added two birdies to finish with a 72. His strong final round moved him nine spots up the leaderboard into 17th place.
Senior Kevin Murphy finished in a tie for 27th place with a 17-over 77-79-77--233, sophomore Tom Kerkvliet shot a 22-over 88-73-77--238 for a tie for 37th and junior Jonas Liebich was tied for 44th with a 24-over 76-76-88--240.
Tanner Napier of Arkansas State was the lone player in the field to finish in red numbers, shooting a 5-under 68-71-72--211 to claim medalist honors.
Oregon State's spring season begins on Thursday, Feb. 2 when the Beavers compete at the three-day Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai'i.
