Beavers fall to Cardinal in double overtime
October 09, 2016 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Stanford in double overtime on Sunday in a Pacific-12 Conference men's soccer game at Lorenz Field.
"I thought we had a very solid first half," said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. "As the game went on, I think we got a little bit tired, and we weren't creating as many chances. It's a tough one to swallow, because I don't think we deserved to lose the game, I think we deserved to get something out of it. This one hurts, but we'll dust ourselves down and get ready for the next one."
The Cardinal scored the game-winner at 104:01 when Tomas Hilliard-Arce headed home Sam Werner's corner kick for his first goal of the season.
Freshman midfielder David Norman had two of OSU's three shots on goal and three attempts overall. Freshman defender Eric Diaz had two attempts, one of which was on goal.
OSU junior goalie Nolan Wirth had five saves, several of which were spectacular and kept the Cardinal off the board until Hilliard-Arce's decisive header.
It was the third overtime game in four Pac-12 starts for the Beavers (4-5-3, 0-2-2 Pac-12), who tied California 2-2 on Thursday night in their first game of the weekend. The Beavers had not lost in OT since falling to Stanford in 2013, also at Lorenz Field.
Stanford (6-2-3, 3-0-0) completed a weekend sweep of the Pac-12's northern schools. It blanked Washington 2-0 in Seattle on Thursday.
OSU resumes conference action at 4 p.m. Friday against Washington, also at Lorenz Field. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
