Beavers Soar Past Ducks
January 09, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Corvallis, Ore. – Seniors Ruth Hamblin (pictured) and Jamie Weisner just missed double-doubles and Oregon State extended its domination of the women's basketball Civil War by topping Oregon 60-33 on Friday night before a Gill Coliseum crowd of 4,462.
Hamblin had 15 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots and Weisner added 10 points and nine rebounds as the 11th-ranked Beavers (11-3, 2-1 Pac-12) dumped the Ducks (11-3, 0-3) for the 10th consecutive time.
"I'm really proud of the effort tonight," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "Our defense was phenomenal tonight. We were very accurate and made very few mistakes. We challenged shots and did a good job on the boards. We have a lot of repect for Oregon, and it took a big effort to slow them down today."
Junior guard Gabriella Hanson added 11 points, four steals and three assists and senior forward Deven Hunter had seven points, a season-high 11 rebounds, and three assists. Freshman guard Katie McWilliams had seven points and four assists as the Beavers presented a balanced offense.
The contest marked Oregon State's fifth-consecutive game without the services of Naismith Trophy candidate Sydney Wiese, who missed the game due to injury.
OSU started slowly but steadily pulled away midway through the first quarter after using a 6-0 run to surge ahead 9-5. Oregon drew within 9-7 but Weisner hit a 3-pointer for a 12-7 advantage and Oregon would never get any closer.
The Beavers led 16-7 after one quarter and stretched the margin to 17 (26-9) with a 10-2 run in the opening five minutes of the second period, sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from McWilliams and Hunter. The entire run was 17-2 over parts of two quarters.
Oregon drew within 12 just before halftime but Hanson scored on a driving layup with 20 seconds to play for a 32-18 intermission edge. Oregon never got closer than 12 points thereafter. OSU led 46-24 after three quarters and by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter.
The Beavers completely stifled an offense that was averaging 84 points per game. Oregon shot just 22 percent (14-65) from the field and missed its final 16 3-point shots while finishing 1-for-18 from beyond the arc. OSU also outrebounded Oregon 49-38 and had a 7-1 advantage in blocked shots.
OSU has now won the last three games in the series by 33, 29 and 27 points. The 33 points was the fewest-ever scored by the Ducks in the 88 games between the teams; their old record for futility was 37, at Gill Coliseum last season.
Beavers' coach Scott Rueck is now 10-1 lifetime in Civil War games and has never lost to the Ducks at Gill Coliseum.
Hunter, who set her previous season rebounding high (10) against Longwood on Nov. 13, moved into fourth place on OSU's career rebounding list with 768 with her 22nd all-time double-figure rebounding performance. She passed Sonjhia Fleming (1990-93), who had 759.
The game was presented by PacificSource Health Plans, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores as part of the Civil War Rivalry Series.
The Beavers go for their 11th consecutive victory over the Ducks on Sunday in a noon game at Knight Arena in Eugene. It will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
