Beavers Win 11th-Straight Civil War
January 10, 2016 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 11/12 Oregon State women's basketball team outscored rival Oregon 35-20 in the second half to sweep the season-series with a 59-45 win over the Ducks Sunday afternoon in Eugene. The win was the Beavers' 11th-straight victory in the Civil War series presented by PacificSource Health Plans, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores.
“I was really proud of our effort today against a good team,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “We knew Oregon would bring a big effort. It's weird to play the same team back-to-back, and it's rare in our sport. I thought our team rallied and played really well in the second half. We executed at both ends of the floor and kept them out of transition for the most part. I thought we got better as the game went on.”
Senior Ruth Hamblin filled the stat-sheet yet again, putting up 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Fellow senior Jamie Weisner finished with 11 points and six boards, while junior Gabriella Hanson ended the afternoon with 12 points.
Freshman Katie McWilliams tallied eight points, five assists and four rebounds. Seniors Deven Hunter and Samantha Siegner finished with nine and seven points, respectively. The current Oregon State senior class has never lost to the Ducks.
The Beavers shot 47.8 percent from the floor, compared to 35.3 percent for the Ducks, and OSU held a 35-27 edge on the boards.
The contest marked the sixth-straight game the Beavers played without the services of Naismith Trophy candidate Sydney Wiese, who missed the game due to injury.
Oregon State jumped out in front right from the start, taking a 9-2 lead early in the first quarter propelled by 3-pointers from Weisner and Hanson. The Beavers would lead by as many as nine in the frame, but Oregon made a run late in the period, and the teams headed to the second quarter with OSU up 17-12.
The two sides would trade punches early in the second, before the Ducks surged to take the lead late in the quarter. Oregon would hold a 25-24 advantage at the break.
Oregon State responded to start the second half, scoring the first seven points of the third quarter to return the lead to the Orange and Black. The Beavers would proceed to outscore the Ducks 14-6 in the period to take a 38-31 edge into the closing frame.
Oregon State would extend the lead to double-figures early in the fourth quarter, and would control the game from there, leading by as many as 20 on the way to the 14-point victory.
The Beavers will return home Friday to host No. 21 California, in a game that will tip-off at 8 p.m.
