Beavers Fall to Bruins
January 05, 2016 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 10/11 Oregon State women's basketball team could not overcome a strong effort from No. 15 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion Monday evening, falling to the Bruins by a score of 71-51.
“UCLA played a great game tonight,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “This was a complete effort where they got production from everyone. We have progressed well as a team through all of our experiences this year and that's what we need to keep doing to get ready for the next challenge. We will take these lessons and learn from them, and that's what this team has done consistently.”
The Beavers played the game short-handed, as Naismith Trophy candidate Sydney Wiese missed her fourth-straight contest due to injury. Oregon State also played much of the first half without the services of seniors Ruth Hamblin and Jamie Weisner due to early foul trouble.
Despite playing just 11 minutes in the opening two quarters, Weisner finished the game with 19 points on 7-for-14 shooting, as she narrowly missed her fifth 20-point performance of the year. Fellow senior Samantha Siegner hit all three of her field goal attempts to finish with eight points.
Freshman Katie McWilliams and senior Ruth Hamblin tallied seven points apiece. Junior Gabriella Hanson and senior Deven Hunter led the team with eight rebounds each. As a team, Oregon State held a 42-34 edge on the boards.
UCLA jumped out in front early on, using some hot shooting to take a 16-8 first-quarter lead. Oregon State would battle back from there, chipping away at the Bruin advantage to end the opening period down 22-19.
The Beavers found themselves short-handed in the second-quarter, as Hamblin and Weisner both missed the majority of the period due to foul trouble. The Bruins would take advantage, extending their lead to double-figures at 31-21 early in the quarter. UCLA took a 35-27 edge into the intermission.
Overall Hamblin played just four minutes in the first half, while Weisner played just 11.
The teams traded punches to start the third quarter. Oregon State would get back within six in the period, but the Bruins would strike back to head into the fourth quarter up 59-46. UCLA would hang on from there to take the victory.
The Beavers will return home Friday to take on Oregon in the Civil War Rivalry Series presented by PacificSource Health Plans, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores.
