
Softball Q&A: Dacia Sykes

CORVALLIS, Ore. – In the days leading up to the 2016 season, OSUBeavers.com will help you get to know the 2016 Oregon State softball team a little better with some Q&A sessions. Featured in today's Q&A is sophomore catcher/utility player Dacia Sykes.
Sykes, a native of Las Vegas, Nev., will join the Beavers as a sophomore after spending her freshman season at the College of Southern Nevada. An all-region selection in 2015, Sykes concluded her freshman campaign with a .453 batting average, eight home runs and 47 runs batted in.
What is your favorite thing about being part of the program?
Actually being able to say that I'm a part of a Pac-12 program and proudly representing the Beavers everywhere I go!
How would you best describe the coaching staff?
Very upbeat and motivational.
What trip are you most looking forward to this season?
Las Vegas (her hometown).
Do you have any gameday rituals or superstitions? If so, what are some of them?
I tape my wrist and write on the tape the names of those who have passed away and had an impact on my life.
What's the one rule you would change in softball?
I would change the “drop third strike” rule.
If you could play any other position for one day, what would it be and why?
Pitcher, just to see how the game is through their eyes.
What is your favorite sport to attend or watch outside of softball? Why?
Baseball, because I can relate to it the most!
Which of your teammates would be most likely to U.S. President or political office? Why?
Bev Miller. She is a great leader and is someone you can trust.
Which of your teammates would be most likely to be a comedian? Why?
Taylor Cotton. She has a very sarcastic sense of humor.
Which teammate would be most likely to be a coach one day? Why?
Natalie Hampton. She is very helpful and is good at explaining things.
What are your hobbies outside of playing softball?
Photography.
When did you start playing softball and how did you get your start playing?
I started playing when I was 10. My cousin got me in to it.
What sets softball apart from the other sports you enjoy?
Softball is the only one I'm good at.
What advice would you give to a young athlete who has aspirations of playing sports at the collegiate level?
Take all the advice given to you at camps. You don't look stupid when you're loud and trying hard.
Do you remember your first home run? If so, describe it.
My first home run was a grand slam at a showcase.
