
Softball Q&A: Shelby Weeks

CORVALLIS, Ore. – In the days leading up to the 2016 season, OSUBeavers.com will help you get to know the 2016 Oregon State softball team a little better with some Q&A sessions. Featured in today's Q&A is freshman outfielder Shelby Weeks.
A Tracy, Calif. native, Weeks was a three-time first-team all-league selection at Merrill F. West High School. Weeks recorded a batting average over .500 in each of her last three seasons, hitting .547 as a sophomore, .587 as a junior and .536 as a senior.
When did you know you wanted to play at Oregon State?
My sophomore year of high school.
How would you best describe the coaching staff?
Passionate.
What trip are you most looking forward to this season?
The Stanford trip.
Does the number you wear have any significance? If so, what is it?
It's my mom's favorite number (20), and it's the same as my birthday (August 20).
What's the one rule you would change in softball, if any?
None.
If you could play any other position for one day, what would it be and why?
I wouldn't want to play any other position.
What is your favorite sport to attend or watch outside of softball? Why?
Basketball, because the energy in Gill Coliseum is awesome.
Which teammate would be most likely to be a coach one day? Why?
Lovie (Lopez).
What's your favorite catchphrase that one of your coaches uses?
“ 'Outies' (outfielders) rule!” – head coach Laura Berg
When did you start playing softball and how did you get your start playing?
I started playing when I was eight years old. My dad and I always used to throw together, and that was part of how he got me into the sport.
What sets softball apart from the other sports you enjoy?
In softball, you have to be talented as far as the skills required to play the game, and not just be athletic.
What advice would you give to a young athlete who has aspirations of playing sports at the collegiate level?
Develop a good work ethic and you will fall in the right direction. Don't worry about any other different programs that others go to. Focus on your own path.
Do you remember your first home run? If so, describe it.
My first over the fence home run came in Colorado my sophomore year of high school. I was playing for my travelling team (All-American Sports Academy).
