Gardiner Wins All-Around as Beavers Fall at Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The 11th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team pieced together three strong rotations before struggling on the balance beam falling to No. 6 Utah, 196.125-195.125, Saturday afternoon.
Junior All-American Madeline Gardiner earned her third straight all-around win to open the season scoring 39.150. Gardiner scored 9.875 on the floor exercise to tie for third and a 9.85 on the vault to tie for second in the meet.
“We had a lot of changes to the lineup tonight and we have to be tough through those changes,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “We need to get to a point where it doesn't look like we're scrambling. The beam was extremely frustrating to watch and I know they are much better than what we showed today.”
Oregon State posted a season-best score of 49.100 in the opening rotation on the uneven bars. Freshman Mariana Colussi-Pelaez scored 9.750 to start the night for the Beavers. Sophomore Shireen Khamedoost and freshman McKenna Singley, both from nearby Bountiful, Utah, posted OSU's high scores of 9.850 and 9.875 respectively. Junior Kaytianna McMillan added a 9.825 and freshman Mary Jacobsen tallied 9.800.
The Beavers continued to show improvement on the floor exercise behind a pair of 9.85's from seniors Risa Perez and Jamie Radermacher and a season-high 9.875 from Gardiner.
Trailing Utah 147.700-147.125 heading into the final rotation, the Beavers were well on their way to a solid score before being undone by the balance beam. A pair of falls mixed with a pair of failed series connections put a win out of reach for the Orange and Black. McMillan led the Beavers' efforts on the apparatus with a season-best 9.850.
Oregon State returns the friendly confines of Gill Coliseum next Saturday, Jan. 30 for the annual DAM Cancer meet against Arizona State at 4 p.m. In addition, the DAM Cancer Lunch and Silent Auction will precede the meet beginning at 1 p.m. in the Club Level of Reser Stadium.
