
Softball Q&A: Jessica Garcia

CORVALLIS, Ore. – In the days leading up to the 2016 season, OSUBeavers.com will help you get to know the 2016 Oregon State softball team a little better with some Q&A sessions. Featured in today's Q&A is freshman outfielder Jessica Garcia.
Garcia will begin her first collegiate softball season this year after coming to Corvallis from Hughson, Calif. One of four newcomers in this year's class from the state of California, Garcia hit .636 her senior season at Hughson High School and was a four-time all-state selection.
What is your favorite thing about being part of the program?
Beaver Nation and how supportive the fans are. It's like one family.
When did you know you wanted to play at Oregon State?
Around my sophomore year.
How would you best describe the coaching staff?
Funny, but competitive and down to business when we need to be.
What trip are you most looking forward to this season?
Our opening tournament because my family is coming to watch and support us.
If you could play any other position for one day, what would it be and why?
I wouldn't play anywhere else because outfield is the best!
What is your favorite sport to attend or watch outside of softball? Why?
Basketball or soccer because I am passionate about both and can relate to them.
Which teammate would be most likely to be a coach one day? Why?
Lovie (Lopez). She has said she wants to and she has the qualities to be one.
What's your favorite catchphrase that one of your coaches uses?
“ 'Outies' (outfielders) rule!” – Head coach Laura Berg
What are your hobbies outside of playing softball?
Playing other sports, dancing, Netflix and sleeping.
When did you start playing softball and how did you get your start playing?
I started playing when I was around six years old. I started when I was young and have fallen in love with the game since.
What sets softball apart from the other sports you enjoy?
The constant adrenaline rushes, the loud atmospheres and all of the memorable and intense moments.
What advice would you give to a young athlete who has aspirations of playing sports at the collegiate level?
Hard work and academics are everything. Someone is always watching you on and off the field.
