Beavers move up to No. 22
January 19, 2016 | Wrestling
Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team moved up one spot to No. 22 on Tuesday in the weekly USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll, following a 32-7 victory over Wyoming this past Saturday.
However, the Beavers dropped two spots to No. 19 in InterMat's team rankings, the lopsided win notwithstanding. They remained at No. 23 in InterMat's tournament rankings.
The Beavers were the only Pacific-12 Conference team in the NWCA Top 25. Arizona State (10) and Stanford (5) received votes.
OSU's three ranked wrestlers all won against Wyoming and remained in InterMat's and The Open Mat's Top 20 in their respective weight classes.
Redshirt junior Joey Palmer (17-7) stayed No. 19 in The Open Mat's rankings, and No. 20 in InterMat's evaluation.
Sophomore 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser (19-5) remained at No. 6 in InterMat's rankings and No. 7 in The Open Mat's poll after defeating 15th-ranked Drew Templeman of Wyoming by major decision.
Redshirt sophomore heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi (16-3) dropped one spot in both polls – to No. 10 in The Open Mat rankings and No. 11 in the InterMat rankings – despite a 13-6 decision over 18th-ranked Tanner Harms.
Penn State stayed No. 1, followed by Iowa, North Carolina State, Missouri and Oklahoma State.
Bresser, Palmer and senior 165-pounder Seth Thomas were also No. 1 in their respective weight classes in this week's Pac-12 rankings. Thomas was ranked second last week.
Dhesi is ranked No. 2; redshirt freshman Corey Griego (184) is ranked third; redshirt sophomores Jack Hathaway (141) and Tyler Chay (174) are ranked fourth. Redshirt junior Joey Delgado (149) and redshirt sophomore Cody Crawford (197) are ranked fifth and redshirt sophomore Abraham Rodriguez (159) is ranked sixth.
The Beavers are idle this weekend. They open Pac-12 action at Arizona State on Jan. 29 in a dual that will be televised by Pac-12 Networks. Their next home match is Jan. 31 against Northern Colorado.
