QUICKLY: Oregon State is off to its best start since 1989-90 when Gary Payton was a senior and the Beavers last advanced to the NCAA Tournament ... Gary Payton II is the only player in the country averaging at least 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals ... Payton II leads the Pac-12 in steals (2.5, 15th in the nation) and is second in the conference in assists (5.4) ... Olaf Schaftenaar had made at least one 3-pointer in a career-best 13 consecutive games ... Tres Tinkle is averaging 15.3 points and 5.4 rebounds, while shooting 53.1 percent from the field, over the past seven games ... Stephen Thompson Jr. is 7-for-16 from beyond the arc the past four games ... Oregon State had a season-low eight turnovers against both Oregon and California ... The Beavers are 16-1 (6-0 this season) under Wayne Tinkle when outrebounding their opponent ... Oregon State leads the Pac-12 in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.312).
THE SERIES: vs. COLORADO: Oregon State and Colorado meet for the 17th time with the Buffaloes holding an 11-5 advantage, including a commanding 7-1 mark at home. The Beavers' lone win in Boulder came on March 9, 2013 when they rallied in the second half for a 64-58 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Beavers won at home season, 72-58, on Feb. 21. Gary Payton II had 24 points and an Oregon State single-game record seven blocked shots. Oregon State also set a single-game team record with 13 blocked shots.
They met again the first round of last year's Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas with Colorado winning 78-71 on March 11. Malcolm Duvivier and Payton II each scored 17 points and Olaf Schaftenaar made four 3-pointers to finish with 16.
The Oregon State-Colorado series began in 1940. The Buffaloes won the first five games before the Beavers got their first win in the series on Dec. 4, 2004 at Gill Coliseum, 98-87. Since Colorado became a member of the Pac-12 in 2011, the Buffaloes have won five of the eight games, including two in the Pac-12 Tournament.
A WIN OVER THE BUFFALOES: If Oregon State defeats Colorado it will improve to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in Pac-12 play. It would also:
- Give Oregon State a winning record through four conference games for the first time since 1993 (that team started 5-0).
- Equal the number of Pac-12 road wins the Beavers had last season (one).
- Give Oregon State more road wins this season (three) than last season (two).
