CORVALLIS, Ore. – Junior All-American Madeline Gardiner won the all-around with a 39.225 score but 12th-ranked Oregon State fell 196.175-195.425 to No. 10 Auburn on Sunday in its season opener before a Gill Coliseum crowd of 2,719.
It was the 15th career event victory for Gardiner, a three-time All-American who took third on beam at the 2015 NCAA Championships. She took second on beam (9.85), tied for third on floor (9.8), tied for third (9.8) on vault and was seventh on bars.
“I think that what we did was a good place to start and we can always improve,” Gardiner said. “I'm proud of how we started.”
OSU's lone event winner was senior Jamie Radermacher, who tied for first place on floor exercise with a 9.875. Sophomore Dani Dessaints took second in the vault (9.9) and the bars (9.85) and set personal-bests in each event.
“This was the first time I have competed that vault and it was a little nerve-wracking,” Dessaints said. “I knew with team right next to me they had the confidence in me.”
The Beavers' top rotation was the vault, as Dessaints anchored a lineup that scored 49.125. That gave OSU a .125 lead after one rotation, but the Tigers surged ahead 98.125-98.025 at the midway point and pulled away with excellent floor (49.050) and beam (49.00) rotations.
OSU nearly cracked 49 points on bars with a freshman-filled rotation that scored 48.900. All told the Beavers hit 22 of 24 performances and did not count a fall.
“Bars did a great job a great job for the beginning of the year considering we had three freshmen in that lineup,” OSU coach Tanya Chaplin said. “I know they were pretty nervous but for the most part they did okay. They have a long way to go.
“I know there is so much more we can get out of this team. We have so much more potential on floor,” which was the lowest-scoring rotation (48.650). "We have others that are going to be ready in the next couple of weeks.”
Other Beavers notching personal-bests were freshman Mary Jacobsen (9.775) and sophomore Shireen Khamedoost (9.75) on the vault; freshman Mariana Colussi-Pelaez (9.75) on the bars; junior Megan Jimenez (9.725) on the beam and Jimenez (9.725) and Jacobsen (9.475) on the floor.
OSU competed without senior all-arounder Erika Aufiero, who is sidelined for the season with a knee injury suffered in practice this past week. She was an All-American on bars in 2015 and an All-Pac-12 Conference selection on bars in 2013 and vault in 2015.
The Beavers (0-1) return to action at 4 p.m. PST Friday in a five-way meet featuring Illinois State, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the University of Bridgeport and host Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., the hometown of OSU head coach Tanya Chaplin.
