Collins throws for 275 yards in 42-24 setback

Corvallis – The Oregon State football team fell to 2-2 on the season on Friday night following a 42-24 setback to No. 21 Stanford at Reser Stadium in its Pacific-12 Conference opener.
The Beavers battled the Cardinal (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) the entire game and were within 35-24 early in the fourth quarter before Stanford finally pulled away.
Freshman quarterback Seth Collins completed 20 of 36 passes for a career-high 275 yards and a touchdown, scored on a four-yard run and either rushed or passed for a score for the fourth game in a row. He now has 306 yards rushing in four games and is on pace to shatter Don Shanklin's 1994 school record of 630 rushing yards by a quarterback.
Seven of his completions went to sophomore receiver Jordan Villamin, for 138 yards and a touchdown. Villamin has one TD reception in three of OSU's four games.
Junior linebacker Caleb Saulo led the defense with a career-best 13 tackles. He also caused a fumble, one of two turnovers forced by the defense. Sophomore free safety Justin Strong had eight tackles to match his season high.
The Beavers were within 21-17 at halftime following a 24-yard field goal with 22 seconds left in the second quarter. They twice rallied from one-touchdown deficits to tie the game at 7-7 and 14-14 before the Cardinal took the lead for good, 21-14 with 3:03 left in the half.
OSU responded with a 12-play, 69-yard drive that resulted in Owens' field goal. Collins and redshirt freshman Ryan Nall each scored for the Beavers in the first half. It was the first career touchdown for Nall, a former standout at Central Catholic High School in Portland.
OSU outgained the Cardinal 218-209 in the first half; four backs gained 23 or more yards as the Beavers ground out 111 yards on 23 carries.
The Beavers have a bye next weekend. They resume action on Oct.10 with a Pac-12 game at Arizona. Kickoff time and television information has not been determined.
