Beavers Perfect Run Snapped

PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 6/8 Oregon State men's soccer team placed seven shots on goal, but was unable to get on the scoreboard, as the Beavers fell to Portland 1-0 Thursday evening at Merlo Field in Portland, Ore. The loss is the first for the Beavers this season, as their record moves to 5-1-0.
Senior Mikhail Doholis led Oregon State with five shots in the match, four of which were on goal.
Sophomore Jordan Jones created the Beavers' first chance of the night, using a tremendous piece of athleticism to fire a shot from the top of the box, but the effort trickled just wide. Jones nearly had another chance in the 25th minute when Doholis served a cross into the box. The sophomore narrowly missed getting a touch on the ball at the far post, though, and the cross rolled out of play.
Portland (2-4-1) scored against the run of play in the 27th minute, finding the net on a shot from distance to put the Beavers behind for the first time this season. Jones nearly netted the response for OSU in the closing minutes of the first half, but his flick from close range was saved.
Oregon State continued to create chances in the second half, pressing forward in search of an equalizer. The squad produced back-to-back opportunities in the 65th minute, as Doholis' attempt from distance was saved and Jones' left-footed shot rolled wide. The Beavers would follow that up with two more shots less than two minutes later, as efforts from Doholis and sophomore Timmy Mueller were both saved.
Portland was reduced to 10 men in the 88th minute, when Jackson Jellah received a red card. The Beavers would get a late opportunity to capitalize on the numerical advantage in the 89th minute on a set piece from the top of the box. Mueller pounded his shot into the wall, however, and the Pilots took the win.
The Beavers will return to action Tuesday when they head to Spokane, Wash. for a match against Gonzaga.
