September 23, 2015 | Men's Soccer
SPOKANE, Wash. – Sophomore Jordan Jones scored his fourth goal of the season, but the No. 10/13 Oregon State men's soccer team could not overcome an early deficit as it fell to Gonzaga 2-1 Tuesday afternoon in Spokane, Wash.
With his tally on Tuesday, Jones now has 12 career goals and is tied with fellow sophomore Timmy Mueller for the most on the team this season.
The Beavers (5-2-0) found themselves behind early on, when Gonzaga scored on a shot from distance less than four minutes into the match. Mueller looked like he might level the score just minutes later, but his header was saved by the Gonzaga (4-3-1) goalkeeper. The Bulldogs would proceed to add another goal in the 27th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers would start building some momentum in the latter stages of the first half. It looked as though they might pull one back in the 33rd minute when Jones whipped a dangerous cross into the box. Oregon State couldn't get on the end of it however. Sophomore Graham Smith would create another chance with a header late in the opening frame, but the attempt was just wide and Gonzaga took a two-goal edge into the intermission.
Jones pulled Oregon State back to within a goal early in the second half. Junior Devonte Small started off the move by playing a pass over the top of the back line to find Jones on the right side of goal. The sophomore proceeded to dribble around the goalkeeper, before slotting the ball into the net in the 55th minute.
The Beavers would continue to press forward from there, with senior Mikhail Doholis taking a couple shots from distance in an attempt to level the score. Freshman Don Tchilao came close to tying the game in the 70th minute when he fired a shot from the right side of the box, but the effort was blocked.
Jones nearly scored his second of the night in the 76th minute, taking aim from 10 yards out, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar. The Beavers would put the Bulldogs under consistent pressure for the closing minutes of the game, but could not level the score as the Bulldogs took the win.
Oregon State will return to Paul Lorenz Field Sunday, when it hosts Seattle U at 11 a.m., in a match that will be carried live on Pac-12 Networks.
