Beavers in Italy Day 3: Beavs Win!
August 28, 2015 | Women's Basketball
CIVITANOVA MARCHE, Italy – The Oregon State women's basketball team opened its string of four games on this summer's Italy trip, topping Civitanova Marche Basket 93-49 Friday evening in Civitanova Marche, a town located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea.
“I was happy with the performance,” said head coach Scott Rueck. “It's nice to win on the scoreboard, but more importantly I thought we executed well, especially since this was our first opportunity to play together as a team. I thought we defended well, did a great job of creating some open looks and settled into a nice rhythm.”
Senior Jamie Weisner led all scorers with 20 points, including nine in the third quarter of play. Junior Garbiella Hanson netted 14 points, all of which came in opening 30 minutes. Fellow junior Kolbie Orum tallied 12 points, including 10 in the second half, and senior Deven Hunter also finished in double-figures with 10.
The Beavers controlled the game from start to finish, scoring 12 unanswered points to jump out to a 12-4 lead. Civitanova Marche fought back to take the lead 13-12, but Oregon State ended the first quarter with a 17-0 run to go ahead 29-13.
OSU would not look back from there, taking a 43-24 advantage into the break.
The Beavers would extend their advantage to 30 heading into the final frame, before taking the win by 34.
“I think we came out strong,” Weisner said. “We didn't know what their style of play would be, but we knew they would be physical, and I think we matched that. This was a good start to the Italy trip and a good way to begin 2015-16.”
Freshmen Tarea Green, Katie McWilliams and Taylor Kalmer all took to the floor for the first time in an Oregon State uniform in the contest, while redshirt-sophomore Breanna Brown returned to action after redshirting last season.
Prior to the game, the Beavers took part in a ceremony, hosted by Civitanova Marche. The team enjoyed group introductions, learned about the town and the club, and was recognized by the vice mayor.
Oregon State will head to Siena tomorrow for a walking tour of the town, before taking on AD Basket Femminile Le Mura in the evening.
