IRA Championships: Day 2
May 30, 2015 | Men's Rowing
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – A pair of Oregon State crews returned to racing Saturday morning on the shores of Mercer Lake at the Intercollegiate Rowing (IRA) Championships regatta.
In the third semifinal of the Varsity 8 division, Oregon State, ranked 16th in the nation entering the weekend, stayed in the race throughout the 2,000-meter course, but came up short at the finish taking sixth. No. 13 Dartmouth crossed the finish first in a time of 5-minutes, 43.615-seconds. No. 18 Holy Cross took second and No. 15 Wisconsin was third to secure spots in the Third Final on Sunday. OSU, which recorded a time of 5:50.470, will be joined from today's semi in the Fourth Final by George Washington and No. 19 Syracuse.
“This is about what I expected based off of yesterday's results,” interim head coach Gabe Winkler said. “I think they still have their best race to come tomorrow. It's just unfortunate that that means they didn't qualify (to the Third Final) today.”
In the Second Varsity 8, Oregon State's crew showed improvement from Friday registering a third place finish in the Semifinal 3. Navy came in first in a time of 5:51.407, while the Beavers battled George Washington for second place. GW's crew held off OSU to take second, while Oregon State pulled in with a time of 5:58.920, nearly six seconds ahead of the crew from Florida Tech.
The Beavers are back on the water on Sunday with the 2V8 and 3V8 each racing in the Third Finals while the V8 will go in the Fourth Final.
