Opening Day Regatta

Beavs End Regular Season Strong in Seattle
May 03, 2015 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE, Wash. – Four crews from the No. 13 Oregon State men's rowing team turned in strong performances at the Opening Day Regatta in Seattle Saturday morning.
“It was a beautiful day for the Windermere Cup and we had some great racing today,” interim head coach Gabe Winkler said. “The JV was in a tough fight with Columbia and just a couple strokes caused them to come up on the short end. However, the 3V found the right gear in the last 50 (meters) to claw from behind and edge out Columbia. Now the regular season is over and we are in championship mode with Pac-12's and IRA's coming up.”
In was a fantastic day in Seattle for Opening Day as Oregon State race four boats: the Junior Varsity 8, Third Varsity 8, Varsity 4+ and Second Varsity 4+.
In the best race of the day, OSU's 3V8 coxed by Jacqueline Logsdon and powered by Collin Griffitts, Callum Davies, Austin Erickson, Michael Jagielski, Henry Stout, Tyler MacDonald, Rafael Gorriarán and Alec Martin, snatched a win from Columbia with a strong sprint to overtake the east coast crew in the final 50 meters. The Beavers, who trailed third-place Columbia by 5.5 seconds at the 1,000-meter mark, overcame a four-second differential in the final 500 to finish third behind a pair of Washington crews. The margin for third proved to be just one tenth of a second, 5:58.4-5:58.5
It was a similar situation for the JV8 in the Erickson Cascade Cup race as the OSU and Columbia crews found themselves behind the Huskies battling for second. This time the Beavers fell just short posting a time of 6:25.9 to Columbia's 6:24.2.
OSU also raced a pair of fours against Washington's Varsity 4+ finishing second and third.
The Beavers are idle until May 17 when they'll race at the Pac-12 Championships at Gold River, Calif.
