SEATTLE, Wash. - The Oregon State softball team out-hit No. 20 Washington 10-7, but the Huskies took a 5-4 win on a walk-off Saturday evening in Seattle, Wash.
Oregon State (25-24, 5-17 Pac-12) held a 4-3 lead after five innings, but Washington (38-13, 9-9) scored a pair of late runs to take the victory.
Senior CJ Chirichigno went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Junior Mikela Manewa and freshman Lovie Lopez finished with two hits apiece, while senior Dani Gilmore notched the 207th hit of her career.
Junior Sammi Noland, senior Hannah Akamine and freshman McKenna Arriola each tallied a hit in the contest.
Junior pitcher Beverly Miller made her return to the circle for the Beavers, throwing five innings and striking out three batters.
Oregon State would threaten in the top of the first, when Gilmore fired a single up the middle before redshirt sophomore Natalie Hampton was hit by a pitch. Washington would work out of it though, to keep the Beavers off the board. The Huskies would respond by plating a pair in the bottom of the frame, before Oregon State turned a double play to help end the inning.
The Beavers would put another runner in scoring position in the 2nd, as Chirichigno was hit by a pitch and advanced on an illegal pitch, but again the runner was stranded.
Oregon State got on the board in the third, as all nine Beavers hit en route to a three run inning. Manewa started things off with a single, before Hampton walked and Noland singled to load the bases. The Beavers would score their first run on a wild pitch, before Chirichigno fired a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Beavers the lead. Arriola singled to load the bases again, but all three runners were stranded and OSU took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the frame.
The Beavers put runners on again in the fourth, when Manewa walked and freshman Alysha Everett reached on a bunt, but both players were stranded. Washington would score a run to tie the game in the bottom of the frame, before Miller worked out of a bases-loaded jam to silence the threat.
The tie wouldn't last long, as the Beavers plated one in the fifth to retake the advantage. Chirichigno singled through the left side before proceeding to steal second. Lopez would single to bring her home, as Oregon State took a 4-3 edge into the bottom of the fifth.
Chirichigno started the sixth by getting hit by a pitch, before Lopez singled to right to put a runner in scoring position for the top of the order. The Beavers could not convert on the chance, however. Washington would score a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh to take the win.
Game two of the series between the Beavers and Huskies will be played tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Seattle.
