Moore Dominates Cal In Opener
May 23, 2015 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Andrew Moore made his last regular season start of the season at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on Friday night.
He made it count.
Moore struck out a season-high 13, and scattered two hits in a complete game shutout of No. 25 California as the No. 18 Beavers opened the series with a 4-0 win over the Golden Bears.
Moore, who improved to 7-2 on the year, faced the minimum 27 batters as his two hits allowed – a single and a double – resulted in inning-ending double plays. He did not issue a walk and faced just one three-ball count all night.
All told, the Eugene native needed just 99 pitches in his most dominant performance of the season, and perhaps, his career.
Caleb Hamilton drove in three runs, including two on a home run in the eighth inning that gave Moore and the Beavers much needed insurance runs. Hamilton had opened the game's scoring with a sixth-inning single that brought Logan Ice in from second.
Hamilton then stole second before scoring on a bloop double to left off the bat of Jeff Hendrix.
Both Hendrix and Hamilton finished with two hits apiece as the Beavers (37-15-1 overall, 18-9-1 Pac-12 Conference) managed six on the night versus Cal starter Daulton Jeffries and reliever Jeff Bain. Jefferies pitched well, but took the loss after allowing four hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Aaron Knapp and Devin Pearson were the lone Cal (33-18, 17-11) players with hits. Pearson singled in the fourth, but was caught stealing on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out to end the frame. In the seventh, Knapp doubled to right to open the inning but was caught at third on a liner to Elliott Cary.
The teams continue their series Saturday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. PT. Fans are encouraged to show up early as the Beavers will honor their 2015 senior class approximately 20 minutes before first pitch.
The game can be seen live on the Pac-12 Networks. Listen to the game over the airwaves on the Beaver Sports Radio Network and via the TuneIn application.
