Beavers Fall to No. 1 California
April 27, 2015 | Men's Rowing
VANCOUVER, Wash. – The No. 13 Oregon State men's rowing team put forth a valiant effort but fell to No. 1 California in four races Sunday morning along the shores of Vancouver Lake.
Despite the result interim head coach Gabe Winkler said, “It was a good showing by our guys. It was kind of exciting to go against the No. 1 team in the country. We'll see them again at Pac-12's and (Cal) is most likely going to be in the hunt for the national championship. I'm proud of my guys for hanging in there as long as they did. Now we've got to get back to training to find some more speed.”
Oregon State's Varsity 8 faced a tough task racing against the top-ranked crew in the country which was coming off a comfortable win of No. 2-ranked Washington on Saturday. The orange and black boat stayed in contact with the Bears through the opening 800-meters but the pace proved to more than the Beavers could maintain. OSU completed the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6-minutes, 5.4-seconds, to Cal's 5:48.6.
OSU's V8 crew consisted of Bobby Vernazza, Josh West, Henry Prosser, Aidan Daly-Jensen, Jesse Maritz, Kyle Wilkins, Spencer Smith and Martin Forde and was coxed by Eric Sumner.
Four other Beaver crews finished the morning with similar results.
The Second Varsity 8 raced hard registering a time of 6:18.3 to Cal's 5:55.4
Facing Cal for the second weekend in a row, the Beavers' Third Varsity 8 pulled together rowing a 'good piece', according to Winkler. OSU covered the course in a time of 6:14.4 while the Bears finished in 5:58.5.
In the final race of the day, two Oregon State fours came up short against Cal's Varsity 4+ (6:40.8). OSU's V4+ A-crew recorded a time of 7:09.8 while the B-boat came in at 7:45.0.
The Beavers race again next Saturday when several crews will travel to Seattle to participate in the Opening Day Regatta.
