No. 17 Beavers Split at Pac-12 Challenge
April 18, 2015 | Men's Rowing
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – Three crews from the No. 17 Oregon State men's rowing team earned victories Saturday against higher-ranked crews from Stanford and Wisconsin at the Pac-12 Challenge.
The Beavers' Varsity 8 burst off the line to take an early lead against the Cardinal in morning racing. However, No. 14 Stanford recovered to take a narrow lead by the 1,000-meter mark and held on to defeat the Beavers with a time of 5:44.6 to OSU's 5:46.5.
In the afternoon, OSU's V8 returned to face No. 11 Wisconsin and once again found itself in a dead heat with the Badgers. The Oregon State boat directed by Eric Sumner and powered by Bobby Vernazza, Josh West, Henry Prosser, Aidan Daly-Jensen, Jesse Maritz, Kyle Wilkins, Spencer Smith and Martin Forde, pulled out the win by one second, 5:42.9-5:43.9.
“It was a mixed bag of results for all three boats today,” interim head coach Gabe Winkler said. “Both of the varsity races were exactly what fans love to see, they were very tight down to the wire. The guys were bummed about the close loss to Stanford. I think that fueled their race against Wisconsin. They were not going to lose two close races.”
OSU's Junior Varsity 8 crew helped the Beavers bounce back from the loss in the morning's opening race by holding off Stanford with a four-second win 5:55.0-5:59.4. In the afternoon the JV8 came up short against Wisconsin pulling in six seconds behind, 5:50.3-5:56.4.
The Third Varsity 8 split its races as well. The Beavers' 3V8 rowed past Stanford in the morning's least competitive race, 6:01.9-6:08.4. However, it was a struggle in the afternoon falling to the Badgers 5:50.3-6:06.6.
The Beavers are back on the water Sunday for Day 2 of the Pac-12 Challenge morning with the V8 racing against the California Rowing Club's 4x (quad) which is training for the Olympics. The 3V8 will race against Cal and OSU will field a Varsity 4+ to face the Bears.
