“We are pleased to be in fourth place going into the final round tomorrow,” Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo said. “We did not have a good morning round and really kind of set ourselves back, but we could not be more proud as a team and as a coaching staff how we battled back this afternoon.
“It would have been easy for them to give up, but they battled this afternoon and worked and played some really good golf. This team is getting better every single day, and both Dawn (Shockley) and I are excited about moving the needle here and starting to beat some top-25 teams. We look forward to teeing it up tomorrow and continue to improve.”
“As well as we played in the round this afternoon, we didn't finish particularly well. We were at 5 under as a team and I think that's part of the growing process of this team and this program. As a program they haven't been there before and I think will continue to learn from it and be more comfortable being under par like that as a team.
“I think there are a ton of good things to come with this team and this program. Like I said, I'm just very proud of how hard they played for their coaches and their university and how they battled this afternoon with no give up.”
Peterson, a sophomore from Canby, Ore., had her first career round in red figures, shooting a 1-under 71 in the afternoon that included five birdies. She's in fourth place with a 1-over 74-71--145 and trails only Esther Lee of Colorado (3-under 141), Suchaya Tangkamolprasert of Northwestern (1-under 143) and Lucia Gutierrez of California (even-par 144).
Peterson's previous best round was a pair of even-par 72's at the Westbrook Spring Invitational last year and the Oregon State Invitational this past fall. Her best career finish is a tie for 13th place at the Oregon State Invitational, which was held at the Beavers' home course, Trysting Tree Golf Club.
Swanson, a freshman from Forest Grove, Ore., is playing in her first tournament of the spring season after playing in all five fall tournaments. The 1-under 71 she shot in the afternoon round is by far her best career round, bettering the 3-over 75 she shot at the Rose City Collegiate.
The excellent afternoon round vaulted Swanson 40 spots up the leaderbord into a tie for 35th place with an 11-over 84-71--155. Her best career finish is a tie for 24th place at the Rose City Collegiate.
Senior Anica Yoo is tied for 26th place with an 8-over 74-78--152, junior Ashlee Pickerell is tied for 35th with Swanson after carding an 11-over 78-77--155 and junior Chelsea Saelee bounced back in the afternoon to move into a tie for 47th place with a 82-74--156.
