Bresser takes 3rd at Cliff Keen
December 06, 2015 | Wrestling
After falling 7-2 to No. 3-ranked Joey Dance of Virginia Tech in the semifinals in the morning, the ninth-ranked (InterMat) Bresser scored an escape with nine seconds remaining to edge No. 14 Paul Petrov of Bucknell 3-2 in the third-place semifinals. He then led the entire bout in defeating No. 13 Barlow McGhee of Missouri, 4-3, in the third-place showdown.
Bresser also defeated No. 6 David Terao of American on Friday and finished the tournament with a 5-1 record to lead the 23rd-ranked Beavers to 24th place in the 39-team event with 33.5 points. OSU competed without standout sophomore heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi, at the Canadian Olympic Trials this weekend.
In other action on Saturday, 133-pounder Joey Palmer lost 9-6 to Josh Martin of Air Force and 184-pounder Corey Griego fell 11-6 to Kenny Courts of Ohio State in their consolation matches. Each was eliminated with a 3-2 record.
Jack Hathaway (141), Abraham Rodriguez (157), Seth Thomas (165), Ali Alshujery (174), Joey Delgado (149) and Cory Crawford (197) were eliminated after losing twice on Friday.
Dhesi advanced to the heavyweight finals at the Canadian trials, being held at Sherwood Park, Alberta. A native of Surrey, British Columbia, Dhesi is vying for a spot on the 2016 Canadian team for the Rio de Janeiro games.
However, he twice lost 2-2 to Korey Jarvis of the Guelph Wrestling Club in a best-of-3 finals series on Saturday night and took second. Dhesi had advanced by eliminating Gurjot Kooner of the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club on a technical fall (11-0) on Saturday afternoon.
On Friday, Dhesi won by technical fall (12-0) over Kyle Nguyen of the Wesmen Wrestling Club, and then pinned Yakhdan Al-Rekabi of the Montreal YMHA in 4:46 to advance.
OSU resumes dual-meet action on Dec. 18 when it hosts Clackamas Community College in a 7 p.m. matchup at Gill Coliseum. The Cougars are one of the premier junior college programs on the West Coast.
