Three Beavers Remain in Cliff Keen Invitational

Las Vegas, Nev. – Three Oregon State wrestlers remained in contention for hardware on Friday after the opening day of the Cliff Keen Invitational at the Cashman Center.
Ronnie Bresser (125) won three matches and advanced to the championship quarterfinals. Joey Palmer (133) and Corey Griego (184) can each finish as high as third place if they win out today when competition starts at 9 a.m.
The 23rd-ranked Beavers are in 25th place in the 39-team event, with 22 points.
Bresser went 3-0 on an impressive opening day. Palmer won three matches, two by major decision, after losing in the opening round. Griego won, lost, and then won twice to stay alive.
In Saturday's opening action, Bresser will face Joey Dance of Virginia Tech; Palmer will meet Josh Martin of Air Force, and Griego will tangle with Kenny Courts of Ohio State on Saturday.
Jack Hathaway (141), Abraham Rodriguez (157) and Seth Thomas (165) went 1-2 and Ali Alshujery (174) went 0-2 in the afternoon session and were eliminated. Rodriguez had OSU's lone pin.
Joey Delgado (149) and Cody Crawford (197) lost their first evening consolation match and were eliminatxed with 2-2 records.
Also on Friday, heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi won two pool matches at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Sherwood Park, Alberta. A native of Surrey, British Columbia, Dhesi isvying for a spot on the 2016 Canadian team for the Rio de Janeiro games.
Dhesi won by technical fall (12-0) over Kyle Nguyen of the Wesmen Wrestling Club, and then pinned Yakhdan Al-Rekabi of the Montreal YMHA in 4:46 to advance. He will now face Gurjot Kooner of the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club, the same organization Dhesi competes for.
OSU resumes dual-meet action on Dec. 18 when it hosts Clackamas Community College in a 7 p.m. matchup at Gill Coliseum. The Cougars are one of the premier junior college programs on the West Coast.
