Bresser second at Midlands

Evanston, Ill. – Oregon State sophomore Ronnie Bresser placed second on Wednesday in the 125-pound weight class at the 53rd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Northwestern University.
Bresser fell 5-1 to Thomas Gilman of Iowa, a Midlands finalist for the third consecutive year, in the championship match. He trailed 2-1 after one period, 3-1 after two periods and then gave up an escape and a riding-time point in the final period.
Bresser advanced to the finals by pinning Tim Lambert of Nebraska in 2:21 in their semifinal match earlier in the day. He finished the tourney, one of the nation's premier events, with a 4-1 record.
Redshirt freshman Kegan Calkins, competing unattached at 125 pounds, placed sixth after losing 12-4 to Kris Williams of Nebraska in the fifth-place match. Earlier Wednesday, Calkins pinned Ben Thornton of Purdue in 1:30 to advance to the third-place semifinals, where he was pinned by Lambert in 2:40.
Calkins was 4-3 in the two-day event, held at Welsh-Ryan Arena on the Northwestern campus.
The Beavers finished the 43-team event with 50 points, good for 12th place. Iowa won the team title for the 25th time, outlasting Nebraska 152-135.
Juniors Joey Palmer (133) and Joey Delgado (149), sophomore Amarveer Dhesi (hwt.) and redshirt freshman Corey Griego (184) lost their consolation quarterfinal matches on Wednesday morning and were eliminated with 3-2 records. Senior Seth Thomas (165) also lost in that round and finished 2-2.
The unranked Beavers (3-3) will resume their dual-meet schedule on Jan. 7 against Michigan at the Joe Wells Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich. The dual will honor the longtime Michigan assistant coach/OSU head coach, who died earlier this year.
They conclude the road trip at Central Michigan on Jan. 9. Their next home dual is Jan. 16 against Wyoming.
