THE SERIES: Oregon State and Loyola Marymount meet for the fourth time in history with the Beavers leading the series, 2-1. This will be the first time the teams have played since they scored a Gill Coliseum record 230 points on Dec. 19, 1989. The Lions won, 117-113, in that epic game with Bo Kimble (53) and Gary Payton (48) combining for 101 points.
The Beavers won the first two meetings between the schools, 84-69 on Dec. 9, 1987 at Gill and 100-90 on Dec. 7, 1988 at Loyola Marymount. Bill Sherwood led Oregon State with 26 points in the first game and Eric Knox paced the Beavers with 25 in the second. The late Hank Gathers scored 23 in the 1987 game and followed that up with 34 points and 17 rebounds in the 1988 contest.
In those three games against the Lions, Payton averaged 26.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 9.3 assists and 3.7 steals.
QUICKLY: With a win, Oregon State will equal its best start through six games since the 1980-81 team opened 26-0 (the 1981-82, 1984-85, 1986-87, 1989-90, 1997-98, 1998-99, 2002-03 and 2011-12 teams started 5-1) … The Beavers lead the Pac-12 in steals per game (8.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.3) ... Gary Payton II needs at least one steal against Loyola Marymount to tie his father's school record for consecutive games with a steal (37) ... Payton II is the only player in the Pac-12 in the top 10 in scoring (18.6, fourth), rebounding (8.0, ninth), assists (4.8, third) and steals (3.6, first) ... Malcolm Duvivier (.556) and Stephen Thompson Jr. (.542) are 2-3 in the Pac-12 in 3-point field goal percentage ... Thompson Jr. has made multiple 3-pointers in all five games ... Drew Eubanks had five blocked shots against Valparaiso, the most ever by an Oregon State true freshman in a game ... Jarmal Reid (foot) will return to practice late this week and Daniel Gomis (hand) is expected to miss another two weeks.
