CORVALLIS – An explosive third-quarter lifted the No. 7/9 Oregon State women's basketball team to an 86-65 win over UC Riverside Sunday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
“This was a great win for us today,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “I liked the fight and composure this team showed today when we were challenged. UC Riverside is a veteran team that executes a unique offense, and I give them credit for hitting their shots and making a game of it early on. I thought this was a really good test today in front of another great crowd.”
The Beavers (3-0) used a 16-0 run in the third quarter to outscore the Highlanders 23-12 in the frame. Oregon State held UC Riverside (2-2) to 31.3 percent shooting in the second half, after the Highlanders had hit on 46.9 percent of their attempts in the opening frame.
Junior Sydney Wiese posted an outstanding performance across the board, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-6 from 3-point range on her way to a 22-point outing. The guard also filled the stat sheet, recording nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block.
Senior Ruth Hamblin hit seven of her 10 shot attempts en route to 16 points and six rebounds. Fellow senior Jamie Weisner tallied 14 points and five boards, while junior Gabriella Hanson finished with 12 points. Senior Deven Hunter pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists.
As a team, the Beavers shot 56.4 percent on the afternoon, and had a 42-24 advantage in rebounds.
The Beavers jumped out in front early, scoring the first seven points of the game before the Highlanders battled back to level the score at 11-11. The sides would go back and forth from there, and Oregon State ended the first quarter with a 31-27 advantage.
UC Riverside took a 36-34 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Beavers responded by scoring 10 unanswered points to take an eight-point lead. Oregon State would hold on the lead for the remainder of the period, entering the intermission up 47-42.
The Highlanders would proceed to cut into the advantage early in the third quarter, but Oregon State exploded for a 16-0 run over the course of three minutes, sparked by a Wiese 3-point play off a steal, to extend the Beavers' lead to 19. OSU would then proceed to build on the advantage in the closing frame to take the win by 21.
The Beavers will head to Puerto Rico this week for a pair of games, as they play Friday and Saturday against Hofstra and Arkansas, respectively.
