Corvallis, Ore. – Six players scored in double figures as the No. 9/10 Oregon State women's basketball team crushed Longwood 110-45 on Friday night in its season opener before a Gill Coliseum crowd of 2,651.
“I really liked our intensity tonight,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “It was really great to be back on the court, and I thought the team responded really well. If you look at the box score, there weren't a lot of weaknesses. The team came out and executed really well, and I'm very pleased with our effort.”
Senior guard Jamie Weisner hit 9-of-11 shots overall and was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc while scoring a game-high 24 points. Sophomore forward Marie Gulich added 12 points, senior forward Deven Hunter had 11 points and 10 rebounds and senior center Ruth Hamblin, junior guard Sydney Wiese and junior forward Kolbie Orum added 10 points each.
Every player on the roster scored as the Beavers broke the 100-point barrier for the first time 25 games, dating back to a 109-61 rout of Sacramento State on Dec. 6, 2014. The school record is 117 points against Portland State on Jan. 8, 1982.
It was a thoroughly dominating performance in OSU's (1-0) first-ever game against the Lancers (0-1) of the Big South Conference. The Beavers shot 64 percent from the floor (41-64), were 10-of-17 (.588) from deep and made 18 of 21 free throws (.857).
OSU also outrebounded the Lancers 54-18, as senior forward Samantha Siegner complemented Hunter by grabbing eight rebounds in just 21 minutes. Longwood had just four offensive rebounds as the Beavers grabbed 44 of 48 opportunities under their defensive basket and did not allow a second-chance point.
Hunter turned in her eighth career double-double and her 23rd game with 10 or more rebounds. She now has 699 career rebounds in 99 games, sixth on OSU's career list.
OSU also had 29 assists on 54 baskets, led by Wiese's nine. Junior guard Gabriella Hanson and Gulich had five each and 10 different players all had at least one assist.
Coach Scott Rueck subbed liberally from the get-go and no one played more than 24 minutes. OSU trailed just once (10-8), led 26-16 after one quarter and then pulled away by outscoring the Lancers 24-5 in the second quarter to establish a 50-21 halftime advantage.
OSU then went on a 35-12 tear in the third quarter to take an 85-33 lead into the final period. Its largest lead was 66 points.
The Beavers return to action on Monday with a 7 p.m. nonconference road game with the University of Portland at the Chiles Center. OSU fans are encouraged to purchase tickets by calling 503-943-7525, as the team looks to “turn the Chiles Center orange.”
