Jonas Liebich Fires 67 At Nike Invitational
October 05, 2015 | Men's Golf
NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – Jonas Liebich fired a career-best 5-under 67 in the second round of the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club on Monday to lead the Oregon State men's golf team.
Liebich, a sophomore from Ingolstadt, Germany, had six birdies and one bogey at the par-72, 7,015-yard Witch Hollow Golf Course to vault 33 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 28th place with a 2-under 74-67--141.
His previous best score as a collegian was a 1-under 69 at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate last season. The 5 under equals the fifth-lowest score in Oregon State history. Alex Moore holds the school record with a 9-under 63 at the Duck Invitational in 2011.
“Jonas' round was awesome today,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “I was with him for the entire round. For nine holes he hit it perfectly right where he wanted to on each shot. The last nine he only hit three greens in regulation but found a way to keep it going.
“His short game was so good. I'm not sure he would have been able to do what he did last year. It's fun to see his growth.”
The Beavers played better in the second round, shooting a 2-over 290 at the par-72 layout after opening with a 4-over 288 at the par-71, 6,834-yard Ghost Creek Golf Course, but were unable to climb the leaderboard in a competitive 15-team field.
Wake Forest sits in first with a 26-under 546, USC is second at 24-under 548 and Duke is third with a 22-under 550. Oregon State is 14th with a 6-over 578 with 18 holes to play.
The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with tee times off the first and 10th holes. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
“As a team we simply need to limit our mistakes,” Reehoorn said. “Just take a look at how many birdies we have made. We are making as many as the leaders. The issue today was others and some silly mistakes that a team can simply not afford to make in a field of this quality.
“The team is disappointed, but we've got to be ready to rebound tomorrow. We aren't far away from shooting a really low score.”
Junior Kevin Murphy has been consistent all season and he was once again on Monday, shooting an even-par round for the second straight day to put him in a tie for 43rd place with a 143.
Senior Chris Tedesco shot a 73 for the second consecutive round and is tied for 52nd with a 3-over 146, while junior Conner Kumpula is tied for 64th with a 7-over 71-79--150 and junior Calum Hill is tied for 68th with an 8-over 73-78--151.
Beau Hossler of Texas and Max Greyserman of Duke are tied for the individual lead with a 10-under 133.
