Ellsbury, Conforto Represent OSU In Postseason
October 05, 2015 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Former Oregon State outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Michael Conforto will represent the Beavers proudly this week when Major League Baseball begins its postseason.
Ellsbury's New York Yankees open with the American League Wild Card game against Houston on Tuesday, at 5 p.m. PT, on ESPN. The winner of the single-game round advances to face Kansas City starting Thursday. The series against the Royals, if it happens, will air on FOX, FOX Sports 1 and the MLB Network.
Conforto's New York Mets, meanwhile, are already in the National League Divisional Series against Los Angeles by virtue of winning the NL East. The Mets open the best-of-5 series Friday in Southern California. Time for that game is yet to be announced and that series is slated to air on TBS.
Ellsbury, who has already won two World Series titles during his tenure with the Boston Red Sox, batted .257 with 15 doubles, seven home runs and 21 stolen bases while playing in 111 games during the 2015 regular season. In 133 career postseason plate appearances, he is batting .301 with 17 RBI and 11 stolen bases.
Ellsbury played for Oregon State from 2003-05, earning All-America honors his junior year before being selected in the first round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft by Boston.
Conforto is in his rookie campaign with the Mets after being selected in the first round of the 2014 draft. He finished the 2015 regular season with 174 official at bats, collecting 14 doubles, nine home runs and 26 RBI while batting .270.
The left fielder played for the Beavers from 2012-14 and is Oregon State's first player to be named an All-American in three different seasons. He was the Pac-12's Freshman of the Year in 2012 before being named the conference's Player of the Year the following two seasons.
Ellsbury and Conforto are two of nine former Beavers who competed at the Major League level this season. They were joined by Josh Osich and Andrew Susac (San Francisco Giants), Daniel Robertson (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), Darwin Barney (Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays), Matt Boyd (Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers), Stefen Romero (Seattle Mariners) and Cole Gillespie (Miami Marlins).
The nine at the Major League level is an Oregon State single-season record.
