BEAVER BASKETBALL: THE COACHES
October 05, 2015 | Women's Basketball
One Oregon State basketball coach has built the Beavers to national prominence. The other is well on his way.
Scott Rueck has been the architect of an accelerated turnaround of the women's basketball program at Oregon State, bringing the team onto the national stage in just five years as head coach. The Beavers reached new heights in the 2014-15 season, setting a school record with 27 wins, en route to a Pac-12 Regular Season Title. For his efforts, Rueck was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year by both the media and the coaches, and earned WBCA Region 8 Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season.
Under Rueck's guidance, Ruth Hamblin earned AP Third Team All-America, Pac-12 Player of the Year (media) and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors, and was joined on the All-Pac-12 team by teammates Jamie Weisner and Sydney Wiese. The Beavers also led the conference with four Pac-12 Player of the Week awards on the season.
Rueck has already moved up to third on the Beavers' career wins list with 90, and will look to reach the 100 win mark early in the 2015-16 season. Prior to taking over at Oregon State, Rueck built George Fox into a national power at the Division III level, leading the team to three Elite-Eight appearances and winning the National Championship in 2009.
Wayne Tinkle delivered as promised in his first season as Oregon State's head basketball coach.
Assuming the helm of a team picked to finish last in the Pac-12 after losing its top five scorers from the previous season, Tinkle guided the Beavers to a 17-14 overall record, the most home wins (15) in school history, and victories over Pac-12 champion Arizona and NCAA Sweet-16 finisher UCLA.
He became just the fourth Oregon State coach since 1928 to record a winning record in his first season, joining Beaver legends Slats Gill, Paul Valenti and Jim Anderson in that exclusive fraternity.
Tinkle narrowly missed out on Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors, but his resume shows those accolades should be coming soon. During his time as the head coach at Montana, he was named the Big Sky Coach of the Year after the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, and the NABC Division I All-District 6 Coach of the Year in 2012.
