Beaver Basketball: The Rivalries
October 26, 2015 | Women's Basketball
The rivalry between the Oregon schools and the Washington schools is so historic that it has its own name -- the Northwest Rivalry Series presented by Alaska Airlines.
The Oregon State men's basketball team first played Oregon in 1903, Washington in 1904 and Washington State in 1907, making them three of the top four most-contested rivalries in all of college basketball.
Games -- Opponents (First Year)
344 -- Oregon State vs. Oregon (1903)
299 -- Oregon vs. Washington (1904)
297 -- Oregon State vs. Washington (1904)
292 -- Oregon State vs. Washington State (1907)
OSU will host all three teams at Gill Coliseum this season -- Oregon in the Pac-12 opener on Sunday, Jan. 3, Washington on Wednesday, Feb. 24 and Washington State on Sunday, Feb. 28. Oregon State will play the Ducks in Eugene on Saturday, Feb. 20, but due to Pac-12 scheduling, the Beavers won't play a game in the State of Washington for the first time since 1911.
The Beaver women have controlled the Civil War over the last five year, beating the Ducks nine times in a row as part of a streak that dates back to 2011. The streak is the longest in Oregon State history against Oregon. The Beavers recorded their biggest ever win over the Ducks last season, a 70-37 win in Eugene. OSU then followed that up by playing Oregon in front of 7,652 fans in Corvallis, the third-largest crowd in school history.
Oregon State has also had its share of success against the Washington schools recently, winning its last five against the Cougars and three of its last four against the Huskies. The Beavers will open their 2015-16 Northwest Rivalry Series with back-to-back games against Oregon on Jan. 8 (Corvallis) and Jan. 10 (Eugene). Oregon State will not host Washington or Washington State this year, as part of the Pac-12's unbalanced schedule, but will make the trip up to the Evergreen State to take on the Huskies and Cougars on Feb. 5 and 7, respectively.
