FAIRFAX, Calif. – The Oregon State men's golf team wrapped up its fall season with a 13th place showing at the two-day, 54-hole Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Tuesday.
The Beavers finished with a 3-under 274-283-292--849 at the par-71, 6,734-yard Meadow Club. California won the 16-team event with a 42-under 810, while Pepperdine and Arizona State tied for second with a 33-under 819.
Oregon State concluded its fall season with third-place finishes at both the Saint Mary's Invitational and Husky Invitational, 13th at the Alister MacKenzie and 14th at the highly-competitive Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational.
“It's not the way we wanted to finish the fall,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “Physically we have all the tools. While there are some technique things that need fixing, mentally we just were not good enough this week or last week to compete.
“When our backs are against the wall we need to stop worrying about the results and just play golf. We did a horrible job of making the most of this opportunity in front of us. We only have so many and this one was wasted.”
Junior Conner Kumpula had a great tournament, finishing in a tie for 22nd place, after carding three rounds in red figures to post a 5-under 68-70-70--208. It's the best three-round score of his career, bettering the even-par 216 he shot at the Amer Ari Invitational last spring.
Junior Calum Hill, a transfer from Louisiana-Monroe, had his best score as a Beaver, shooting a 2-under 69-70-72--211 to finish in a tie for 35th place.
Junior Kevin Murphy shot a 2-over 69-74-72--215 for a tie for 47th place, senior Chris Tedesco finished in a tie for 68th with a 9-over 73-69-80--222 and sophomore Jonas Liebich was tied for 73rd with an 11-over 68-78-78--224.
Cody Blick of San Jose State fired a 17-under 196 to claim medalist honors by one stroke over Jon Rahm of Arizona State and Frederick Wedel of Pepperdine.
Oregon State opens its spring season at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai'i, which will be held Thursday, Feb. 4 through Saturday, Feb. 6.
